Startup weekend is a 54 hours event where you will experience the highs, lows, fun and pressure that make up life at a startup. As you learn how to create a real company, you’ll meet the very best mentors, investors, cofounders, and sponsors who are ready to help you get started.
If you are interested in entrepreneurship the answer is that you must be there. Startup Weekend attendee backgrounds are roughly 50% technical (developers, coders, designers) and 50% business (marketing, finance, law). Whether you are a serial entrepreneur or new to the startup scene, if you are motivated to build a product or startup and open to new ideas you’ll fit right in.
Apart from Organizers, selected Coaches, Speakers, and press, everyone who attends the event is expected to participate all three days. This is important not only to preserve the ‘vibe’ of the weekend (“no talk, all action”) but also to minimize distractions/disruptions for working teams. However, at most Startup Weekends a “Sunday Presentations Only” registration option is available for those wishing to only view the teams’ final presentations.
In Uyo however, the organizing team has announced that the event will take place at Hubitz, 69 Enwe Street, Uyo. According to the event website, “Participants are expected to arrive on Friday the 24th of November, 2017 by 11am at Hubitz, 69 Enwe Street, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Participating teams are expected to stay together without going home till Sunday. Though this is not compulsory but we believe it is going to contribute positively to the team’s outcome on the last day.”
In most cases participants at startup weekends are required to register and pay a certain fee few days to the event date. In Uyo however, the organizing team has announced that the event will be free of all charges to encourage participants. During the weekend, food, internet, accommodation and all necessary comforts will be provided to the participants to help them concentrate on building their various startups. This is made possible through the collaborations within the hubs in Uyo. Alert Nigeria and Hotels.NG who recently has shown great interest in supporting entrepreneurs in the Akwa Ibom ecosystem are expected to support the event.
Everyone who attends the event as an attendee is expected to participate on a team. This is important not only to preserve the mission of Startup Weekend (teamwork!) but also to minimize distractions/disruptions for all working teams. Participants are expected to come with their Laptop, Power cord, Business cards, Camera – take pictures and video.
Whether or not you continue to work on the idea with some or all of your team is completely up to you after the event. Approximately 25% of Startup Weekend participants continue working on their idea with all of their team after the weekend. If you have a business idea or you wish to participate in this fruitful weekend, you can register for the event at Bit.ly/sw-uyo2017.
Expected as judges at the event are Mark Essien of Hotels.NG, Uche Aniche of VenueHero, David Inyangetoh a software engineer, Glory Elijah, a digital marketer and Iboro Otu of AfriAsia Transalantic. Techforest.NG has confirmed from the organizers that the weekend is going to be impactful and we expect new CEOs and founders of new startups by Sunday evening.
Startup weekend is powered by Google for Entrepreneurs and techstars. Winners at the upcoming Startup weekend Uyo are expected to feature at the global level and will be sponsored to get their feet strong as entrepreneurs. You can register here for the event.
